20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Winners for Week 1

My first week of painting for the 20 in 20 giveaway went really well. Thanks to everyone who commented on any or all of the posts! I really appreciate your participation; I was actually taken by suprise by how hard it was to only award 1 winner for each painting. It always sounded like such an empty statement to say, “I wish you all could have won!” but wow, I really wish you all could have won!

I might be a paintin’ machine for the month of June, but I’m not an actual painting robot, so for now I’ll just have to give the paintings to their rightful winners.

First 3 days

Without further ado, the winners for Days 1 – 3 are:

Day 1: Lindsay who said, “Beautiful!”
Day 2: Jeannine | SaylorMade who said, “I am filling out a ‘ballot’ ie: commenting for each one & will retweet often. This is a great idea! I like the combination of a light green with red. I think I may have to invest in a set of gouche paints. I love the look. Recommend a brand?” (BTW, I haven’t ignored your question; I’m actually working on a blog post about gouache to share my thoughts & recommendations).
Day 3: Jess who said, “This is my favorite so far. Love the geometric patterns!”

A special thanks this week to my nieces, Caitlin (who picked the name for Day 1), Alyssa (who picked the name for Day 3), and my nephew Max (who picked the name for Day 2). They drew the names from a basket of well-mixed, folded pieces of paper for a truly random selection.

If you didn’t win one of these, don’t fret! I’ll be giving away 17 more paintings this month. In fact, Day 4’s painting is waiting for your comments!

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 4

I had two ideas for today’s painting. One started with a circle, the other with a square. I decided to crowd source the answer via twitter. I got several votes for circle, and then I got a couple of unique votes for combination of both. Jessica Gowling suggested I create a “cirquare” and Louise Harley-Smeur shared a link that lead me to discover the shape know as a squircle. Cirquare, Squircle; I love them both!

At first I was a little perplexed by what a cirquare would look like, but I’m always interested in a challenge, and I soon had a new idea. Again, I looked to my kaleidoscope drawings for inspiration.

This is a gouache painting, about 4in in diameter on a 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper. I drew the circle by tracing around the base of a flower pot and drew the grid by hand, which is why it’s a little wonky. This is the first painting in this 20 in 20 project that has had any preliminary drawing.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 3

For Day 3 I decided to take inspiration from the kaleidoscope drawings that I’ve been working on lately, drawing from the transparency and fine line texture.

This is a gouache painting, about 3.5in wide and 4.5in tall, on a 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper.

A note on color: I do my best adjust the color of the digital images to match as closely as possible, but it’s tricky business. Compared to the image above, the light blue in real life is a bit duller, while the orange in the center is a brighter coral. The colors most closely match to what you see in the first image in this post.

20 in 20 in June: the Birthday Bash Giveaway

Do you know about Abbey over at aesthetic outburst? If not, I highly recommend you check out her blog. She’s been doing this amazing project called “20 in 20” where she gives away awesome things that she makes every weekday in the month. She’s done this almost each month (except January) since December! I’ve been following along, and it’s been so much fun seeing all the crafty projects she’s created and given away in that time.

For the past few months the idea has been forming that I’d like to do my own 20 in 20 giveaway.

Back in March, I was intent on improving my fine-line painting skills, so I created a few small paintings.

Three

Very pleased with how they turned out, I painted a couple more and sent them off to two of my mail art buddies, Beverly Ealdama and Christina Norberg. Sending those paintings to their new homes was about the time when the idea of doing a large-scale giveaway started to take shape.

Two

June had always seemed like a good month to do a 20 in 20 giveaway, since it’s my birthday month. I enjoy hosting big parties for my birthday where I give little gifts to the people who attend, so the idea of having a big birthday bash on my blog seemed like a natural choice.

Earlier this week I counted the days in June and realized that there are actually 22 weekdays in the month BUT there are exactly 20 weekdays before my birthday! I love the idea of being able to announce the last winners on my actual birthday!

One thing left to do was to test how long it actually takes me to make one of these paintings to see if it would be realistic to finish one each day.

0527

I timed myself when I painted the above composition and was happy to discover that it’ll be very doable to paint one each weekday.

The last piece of this puzzle was the name. I really love the “20 in 20” project title because it’s short, catchy, and just makes so much sense! I asked Abbey if it’d be ok to use the name, and she said I should, “give it a go!” so I’m going to do just that!

Starting June 1st, I’ll be giving away one painting each weekday until the day before my birthday, with the last winners announced on my birthday (which is on the 29th by the way).

The paintings will all be similar in style and size to those included in this post. You can expect them to be abstract, colorful, and about 6 inches square.

I can’t wait to get started, and I really hope you’ll stop by and join the party!
