Daisy Yellow Zine Giveaway Winner

And the winner is: Jana! Congratulations!

Thanks everyone for entering. I really appreciate the time you took to visit my blog and leave a comment. Whenever I do a giveaway, I always wish everyone could win!

If you didn’t win the zine and are still curious about it, I do suggest you consider purchasing a copy from Tammy’s Etsy shop. It is well worth $7.00 and would be a great way to start February off with a creative boost.

Daisy Yellow Zine Giveaway

A few months ago Tammy Garcia, who blogs over at Daisy Yellow, contacted me about writing an article about my daily pattern project for the 10th issue of her zine. I was already a big fan of her blog and the challenges she hosts such as Index Card A Day and the Moments Challenge, so of course I jumped at the chance!

We’ve had a lot of fun going back and forth with each other while perfecting my article. Tammy just released the issue for sale last week, and you can win a copy here on my blog, or via my Instagram.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tammy, her blog is chock full of ideas and inspiration for creating art journal pages and mixed media art work. As I mentioned, she hosts a variety of art making challenges throughout the year, and moderates a really great Facebook group too. I recently joined DY community on Facebook, and I love seeing all the great art people post to the group. It’s all about encouraging and inspiring each other and being proud of the work you create.

In the article I wrote for the zine, I talk about why I started the challenge, how I came up with so many different ideas, changes I made to the challenge from month to month to help me stick with it, what I learned after more than a year of creating patterns everyday, and more!

My article is just one part of a zine that is, “Jam packed with ideas + inspiration.” You’ll also find art journal and photography prompts, Suggestions for altering a hard backed book for use as an art journal, a mini index card art project to try out, and even some blogging tips for creatives. Not to mention the fact that the layout and imagery throughout the pages is super lush and inspiring in its own right.

I’ll be very excited for whomever wins this zine, but if you just can’t wait, you can purchase your own copy right now over on Etsy.

How to Win:

If you want to try your luck, visit Tammy’s page that has all the info about Issue 10 and discover what you are most excited to read about–and your answer doesn’t even have to be my pattern article! :D Come back here to this giveaway post and leave a comment below telling me what part of the zine you can’t wait to read. Feel free to leave a comment on Tammy’s blog as well, but know that only comments left here will be counted toward the giveaway.

If you have already purchased the zine and you win either this or my Instagram giveaway, Tammy has graciously offered to refund the full price of the zine back to you!

I will randomly draw a name on January 31st 2014 which is next Friday (edit: I changed the date from February 1st because I was looking at the wrong calendar! The drawing will be Friday!). I’ll announce the winner here, and also send an email to the winner, so be sure to use an email address that you check frequently.

Increase your chances:

You can also enter on Instagram. Make sure you follow me there, and leave a comment on one of the giveaway photos. While you’re over there, check out Tammy’s colorful photos as well!

New Year, New Sketchbook: Winners

Thanks to everyone who entered the sketchbook giveaway! I really enjoyed reading all your inspiring New Year’s Resolutions, so I thought I’d share a few of my own.

Last year I started a daily photo project, but I only made it to August. I thought about doing a similar daily creative challenge, and in a way I suppose I’m doing one, but it’s less specific: everyday I’m doing SOMETHING to make progress toward my creative goals. The first few days of the year found me doing a major clean up and overhaul of the studio. Now that I have a beautiful space to work in, I’ve been sketching everyday since then. A few creative goals I have are to create more patterns and make at least one large scale painting or drawing. I have a big 3′ x 4′ canvas waiting for me, as well as a huge 4′ wide roll of cotton paper. I also want to get more familiar with Corel Painter, which is a powerful program that I’ve only fumbled around with a few times.

My web design goals are to learn more about javascript so I can write my own code, at least for simple functions, and to make more websites! My health goals are to be able to do at least one “real” push up, and to continue eating healthfully (no more sugar or flour for me!).

Those are the basics of my resolutions for the year. I plan to keep the momentum going throughout the year, that I’ve already built up in these first few days of January, and continue to make progress and have fun with it all!

Ok, ok, so enough about me, and on to the good part. ;)

sketchbooks for giveaway!

Chosen by random number generator, the winners of the sketchbooks are:

Pink Sketchbook: Azizah A. (@GourmetPens)
Blue Sketchbook: Sarah – The Second Magpie
Purple Sketchbook: Maggie

If you’ve won, please contact me with your address by next Wednesday January 18. If I don’t hear from you by then, I’ll choose another winner.

Thanks again to everyone who entered and shared their resolutions for 2012. Here’s to a prosperous and productive year for all!

New Year, New Sketchbook: a giveaway!

While I was out shopping for Christmas presents this year, I found it hard to avoid temptation to pick up a fun item or two for myself. Especially when I went to IKEA, because I discovered that they had brand new sketchbooks! I was so excited that not only did I pick up a few for myself, I also got one of each color to giveaway to 3 of my blog readers!

sketchbooks for giveaway!

That’s right! I’m giving away 3 sketchbooks! I’ll give 1 pink, 1 purple, or 1 blue sketchbook to 3 lucky winners.

I made a quick video to give you a better idea of what they are like.

Please note: I don’t usually pronounce pink as “peenk”. Not sure where that came from. Also, when I say the purple is more purple, I meant that it’s more of a warm purple, not as blue as it looks on the video!

As you can tell from the video, they are filled with blank paper, but they have a nifty ruled plastic insert page too.

I love the size of the book–feels very comfortable to hold on my lap and sketch. Truthfully, it’s not the best quality paper in the world, but it’s perfect for basic sketching.

If you’d like to start off this new year with a new sketchbook, then leave a comment that tells me which is your favorite color of the 3 choices (I’ll do my best to give the winners their favorite, but I can’t make any promises!), and let me know what your New Year’s resolution is if you have one!

I’ll pick the winners at random. Comments for this giveaway will close in 1 week–Next Sunday January 8th (at midnight!) with the winners announced Monday January 9th.

Good luck!

Day 20: Paulette Beete who said, “What a beautifully complex painting. And styling it in the basket is a wonderful idea. Hmmm, think I’m going to reconsider how I’m framing some of my heart and see if working with some flat baskets might work. Thanks for the inspiration A!”

This week I used an overly complicated coin flipping method to ensure that the selection of winners was completely random.

These are the last winners for this giveaway. I know there are a number of commenters who didn’t win one of the paintings, but I’m sure I’ll do another giveaway at some point, so stay tuned! Also planning to open a shop with prints of all the 20 in 20 paintings in the next couple days, so keep an eye out for that as well! Thanks everyone, again, for helping to make this a fun & successful project!

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 20

Woohoo!!! I did it! Today is the last painting for this 20 in 20 giveaway project. I must admit, things got a little rocky for me during the last week or so, but I persevered, and today I can proudly stand back & look at my accomplishment! If you’d like to see an overview of all the paintings, check out my 20 in 20 set on flickr.

Day 20 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

When looking for an item to include in a photo set up for this painting, I was drawn a basket that’s hanging on the wall. Placing the painting in the basket seemed to be the thing to do!

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 19

For Day 19′s painting I wanted to paint something in a loose style; to doodle with the paint brush. The “swoops” theme I’ve explored in the past seemed to be just the ticket. I painted this in layers of color, working intuitively to choose colors as I started each new layer. The result is a somewhat busy pattern, but I think it’s interesting to look at. You can take it in as a whole, and then explore each layer by focusing on one color on another.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Winners for Week 4

I made it through another week with some beautiful paintings to show for it. Have I mentioned how much fun it is for me to see what I come up with each day? It’s always a surprise, and it’s exciting to see this collection of 20 paintings coming together.

Days 14 - 18

Day 17: rica who said, “I love this one Anika! Lovely lovely lovely <3"

Congrats to the winners! If you won a painting, get in touch with your mailing address at aisforanika {at} gmail {dot} com (or you can send a DM on twitter if you follow me!) within 72 hours and I’ll send you the painting!

This week I used an overly complicated coin flipping method to ensure that the selection of winners was completely random. It took a long time, but it was kind of fun!

If you didn’t win one of these paintings, there’s still a chance! I’ll be creating & giving away 2 more paintings before my birthday on the 29th.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 18

The progression of Day 18′s painting is interesting in that I started out with what I thought was a straightforward idea and ended up with something I didn’t expect. Before I started the painting, I had intended to draw the circles without the added texture, and then color in all of the little slices with various colors.

I drew the circular shapes freehand, and the first try wasn’t close enough to a circle, so I fiddled with it, adding more lines until the shape was what I wanted. To mask my “mistakes,” I added more, similar lines to create the texture within the circles. At this point, I still intended to color in each of the sections.

I took a break halfway through the coloring, and when I came back I liked what I saw–the areas with only texture lent a nice contrast, and in a way provided more movement than if all the slices were fully colored in.

Day 18 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

Day 18 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

The color of the photos is pretty accurate to the painting, but I wanted to mention that the lightest pink in the photos is quite bright in person. It’s still a very light pink, but it almost glows which adds a lot of energy to the piece. I guess there are just some colors or tones that a camera can’t capture!

This is a gouache painting that covers the entire 6in square piece of Fabriano Artistico 140lb paper.

**A quick reminder about next week: There are only 2 more paintings left to go! I’ll be announcing the winners of Day 19 & 20 on my birthday, Wednesday June 29th. 20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 17

I must have been tired when I was mixing the colors for yesterday’s painting. I wanted to mix a lovely gray for the connecting pattern, but I couldn’t get away from the purplish hue. I convinced myself it was gray enough, even though it was decidedly purple. Thank goodness it worked with the other colors!

Today I realized what I’d done wrong. For some reason I had it in my head that if you mix dark blue and dark red, you get a dark gray. I honestly don’t know how I forgot that dark blue and dark brown is the true magic combination for making gray. No wonder I ended up with purple!

For today’s painting I felt that I had to make the gray I’d been looking for yesterday. I revisited an old motif–perfect for fine-line practice, plus I had the intention of using brighter, more saturated colors for the rounded shapes.
