20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 16

I decided to do a geometric pattern for Day 16’s painting.

Day 16 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

Day 16 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

The colors in real life are closer to those in the second image that shows the detail of the pattern. The peach is SUPER bright, almost florescent, and the dark, bright purple is really rich in person.

This is a gouache painting that covers the entire 6in square piece of Fabriano Artistico 140lb paper.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 15

For Day 15’s painting I decided to explore transparency of solid shapes and line texture.

Another late posting, and I didn’t even get it posted on the actual day! Bummer. But I think I’ve caught up, and should be posting Day 16’s painting sometime tomorrow morning. Thank you for your patience and flexibility!

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 14

Day 14’s painting was inspired by Christmas Cactus flowers. Like most of my paintings, it eventually took on a life of its own.

0620

I know I’m late posting today’s painting. I had every intention of finishing the painting this morning and posting it shortly thereafter, but life had other plans for me. Not very professional of me, I know, but sometimes you just gotta roll with it.

This is a gouache painting that’s about 4.25in x 4.5in on a 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Winners for Week 3

Yay! Another week successfully completed! Week 3 was the most difficult for me so far because I had a lot going on besides work and making art, but I persevered and worked on the paintings each night, even when I didn’t really feel like it. The great thing about painting is that even if I’m reluctant to start, I’m always so happy once I get out my supplies and start working. And, the great thing about doing a project like this 20 in 20 giveaway is that it provides me with the incentive I needed to get over that reluctance and get the paintings done.

Days 9 - 13

Are you excited to read who won Week 3’s paintings? I won’t keep you in suspense! The winners for Days 9 – 13 are:

Day 9: Alex who said, “I was going to guess hydrangeas as well. Love the colors you’ve used, it’s a great combination :)”
Day 10: Gina G. who said, “This is my favorite one so far! :)”
Day 11: Jessica Gowling who said, “starting to lose hope – you’ve got too many lovely commentators!!!! This one is of course my favorite – so natural. such a win. Still disappointed about not winning cirquare, so to make it up to me, you can just gift me this one…. <3" Day 12: Kikik who said, "How beautiful! This painting would have been easier to do with cut paper, but to do it with the paint brush must have been quite a challenge. Excellent work!" Day 13: Whitney who said, “I want a quilt that looks like this!”

Congrats to the winners! If you won a painting, get in touch with your mailing address at aisforanika {at} gmail {dot} com (or you can send a DM on twitter if you follow me!) within 72 hours and I’ll send you the painting!

This week I had my mom help me pick names out of a basket. I think she’s still wondering why I’m doing this whole thing, but even so, she was happy to help!

If you didn’t win one of these paintings, there’s still a chance! I’ll be creating & giving away 7 more paintings before my birthday on the 29th.

Oh, and by the way, the flower that inspired Day 9’s painting was yarrow! Got a couple guesses for hydrangea, which made sense, but it was actually an unassuming little bunch of yarrow blossoms!

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 13

Day 13’s painting is a pretty little floral arrangement. I was concerned for a while that the colors were a bit “too cute” because they were so bright. With the addition of the dark purple details, however, the tones became more subdued, and now the piece looks more interesting as well.

Day 13 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

Day 13 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

When the painting was finished, it reminded me of a Swedish design, so I just had to take a photo of it with my beloved Dala horses (Thanks Astrid from Red Red Completely Red for enlightening me about their proper name!).

Day 13 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

This is a gouache painting that’s about 4.75in square on a 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 12

Day 12’s painting took forever! It seemed like it would be a pretty simple, straightforward idea to paint when I started. I guess in many ways it was, but there are lots of little precise parts to it, and it took some time! The results are well worth it, even if I did stay up til the wee small hours to finish.

The cool thing about staying up so late was that by the time I’d finished, the full moon had sunk low enough in the sky that I could see it through the window. I took a moment to hold up the painting, and admired the two round shapes together.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 11

Week 3 seems to be the week of lighter, brighter colors on dark background shapes. The trend continues with a new take on an old motif of stones. If you are curious, you can see previous versions of this idea here and here.

Truth be told, I’ve had this image, or something very similar in my mind for a while now. I had wanted to do a painting of dark stones with light stripes, although not necessarily for this project. With the paintings I’ve been doing lately that have lighter colors overlapping dark shapes, the idea of painting colorful lines on the stones proved irresistible, so here we are!

Day 11 of my 20 in 20 Giveaway

This is a gouache painting that’s about 2.5in x 5in on a 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper.

A note on color: I do my best adjust the color of the digital images to match as closely as possible, but it’s tricky business. The color is most accurate in the first two photographs above.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 10

Woohoo! We’ve made it to the halfway point! Thanks to Kimi for suggesting I use “deep blue shadows” yesterday via twitter. I wasn’t able to include her suggestion in yesterday’s painting, but the idea stuck with me and provided the basis for today’s painting.

This was a total experiment, and there were several “i’m not so sure about this” moments, but I think it came together quite nicely.

20 in 20: June Birthday Bash Giveaway, Day 9

Usually I come up with the seed of an idea during the day before I sit down to paint, but for Day 9 not only did I have no ideas about what to paint, I also didn’t really feel like painting. But that’s kind of the point of a project like this–you do it anyway! Once I gathered my supplies together, my mood changed, and I was glad to have a little creative time. I sat down, looked through my paints, flipped through my sketchbook, doodled a bit, got an idea that I sketched out that didn’t go anywhere good; then I looked up and spied a bouquet of wildflowers I’d gathered on a walk. Finally an idea started to take shape.

Day 9 of my 20 in 20 giveaway

I took the above photo with some of the other wild plants/seeds I picked on my walk. The flower in the painting is not pictured above, so bonus points if you can guess what flower inspired today’s painting!

Day 9 of my 20 in 20 giveaway

Thanks to Jeannine for suggesting lime green as a color to go with dark grayish purple and Jessica for suggesting green dots (which remind me of fireflies in this painting), both via twitter!

This is a gouache painting that goes all the way to the edge of the 6in square piece of Arches 90lb paper.
